Ubiquiti EdgeRouter setup
Instructional reference for the supported Ubiquiti EdgeRouter entry. This applies to EdgeOS 2.x or 3.x and does not represent live hardware verification.
Prerequisites
- A compatible Ubiquiti EdgeRouter running EdgeOS 2.x or 3.x
- Your Weird Network venue slug
- Web UI or SSH access to the router
- A setup device connected to the LAN
- WAN connection details and an Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port
- A configuration backup before making changes
Configuration steps
- Prepare and access the router: back up the configuration, factory-reset an existing setup if needed, then access the Web UI or SSH from the LAN.
- Configure WAN and guest LAN: connect the WAN, set the ISP connection details, and configure the guest LAN bridge or switch.
- Create and bind the hotspot profile: create the venue-slug profile, set its session behavior, and bind the hotspot instance to the guest LAN.
- Configure DHCP and DNS: provide guest leases, a default gateway, and DNS forwarding so portal detection can resolve the portal.
- Add the walled garden: allow the portal, required assets, captive-portal detection endpoints, and DNS before authentication.
- Set and check the venue redirect URL: point the profile to the venue portal URL and confirm the venue slug matches.
Verify the network
Connect a clean test device to the guest network, browse to http://neverssl.com to exercise HTTP captive-portal interception, authenticate at the portal, and confirm normal browsing works afterward.
On the EdgeRouter, inspect show hotspot sessions all, then confirm the device appears in the provider dashboard's active sessions.
